Self Defense

(60 minute class)
mugshot of monica anwander, scott fitness personal trainer "First thing's first: This class WILL NOT make you invincible. You will not miraculously become Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Steven Segall, or The Most Amazing Chuck Norris (let's face it … NO ONE can ever compare to Chuck Norris).

This class is open to all members and will be offered on an ongoing basis in 4-week cycles. Each cycle will consist of two one-hour sessions per week, for a total of eight sessions. Each session will build upon the skills learned in the previous sessions. It is not mandatory that you attend all sessions (this isn't high school, I won't call your parents if you skip class); however, you will benefit the most from attending all sessions in a class cycle.

From this class you can expect to gain a basic level of knowledge and skills that could be employed to defend yourself if need be. We will cover basic strikes, stabs, punches, eye gouges, kicks, and blocks … as well as ways to use these skills in sequence to escape from chokes and headlocks. Many of the skills that will be taught in this class have been adapted for our purposes from the most common and basic skills taught in military hand-to-hand combat and the various martial arts. Throughout the 4-week period, we will also discuss ways to avoid potentially dangerous situations. We will also discuss everyday items and their possible uses as weapons.

Partner work is vital to this class, and we will be doing a lot of it. Be prepared to meet new people and make new friends.

We will be utilizing hand-held targets when practicing forceful contact. ABSOLUTELY NO HARMFUL CONTACT will be made during partner work.

I expect to have a lot of fun with this class while maintaining the seriousness of the content. Have fun and don't be afraid to ask questions. You'll get out of this class what you put into it."
