Elements of Dance Instructor & Personal Dance Trainer
"Though I've been bouncing around for as long as I can remember, I didn’t start actually learning how to dance ‘til I was seven. I was lucky to study with Cliff Kerwin and Paul Chambers, who learned the Holm technique directly from Hanya Holm, one of Modern Dance’s progenitors. Once I started I couldn’t stop. By the time I graduated high school I’d performed all over Kansas City with City in Motion’s Children’s Dance Theater. As I put together my schedule that first semester of college, I didn’t think of adding any dance classes. All that reading and no moving wore on me pretty quick. It wasn’t long before I realized that dance was more than a hobby. I got my BA in Dance from KU, performing with Aha Dance Company while I was in school.
Then something happened to me that happens to a lot of people. I got sick. First I quit dancing, then I quit school, then I quit work. Years went by and none of the six doctors who saw me thought to test for food allergies. Almost a year ago my childhood best friend, still in medical school, gave me the diagnosis that put me back on my feet. And now, back in my dancing shoes! Though I can certainly say this experience sucked in dozens of ways, I’ve really learned so much. Having danced since I was little, I never knew what it felt like to live in a body that lacked the muscles you need to balance yourself, or how a beginner’s legs feel while doing leaps for the first time. I’ve been rebuilding myself from the ground up, and that’s what I want to do with you. Once you’re out of short pants it’s hard to find the resources you need to learn how to dance. If you’d love to dance, but don’t know where to start, I’d love to help. There are several basic principles that apply to most any dance form: correct positioning, balance, flexibility, and core strength. You’ll learn these and useful techniques, stretches, and sequences that often show up on a dance floor. Wherever you’re at, I’m here to help you shake it!"
